Britain's Best / Timeless Treasures

 

Britain is a magnificent land of timeless treasures that represent every aspect and period of Creative Expression.

The Beatles estabished British culture - on a global scale - in the realm of Contemporary Art. The world-wide wave of music that The Beatles established was followed by such groups as The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Hollies and The Dave Clark Five.
( Honourable Mention to Sir Elton John, David Bowie, Lulu, Amy Winehouse, Olivia Newton John, Queen, The Moody Blues and Led Zeppelin, among many, many others. )

London is home to Buckingham Palace  -  home of The Queen  -  Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's Cathedral, The Tower of London, the famous ship Discovery, the Gardens and Exhibition Hall at Kew, The British Museum, Tate Britain Galleries, The National Gallery, the Houses of Parliament, the residence of the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street, The Savoy, The Monument To The Great Fire of 1666, and a world-class Zoo. The world-renowned London Underground roundel is considered to be one of the greatest graphic triumphs of Modern Art, and is the symbol for the sweeping London Transport system that goes everywhere around the city.

The Rosetta Stone, The Elgin Marbles, The Parthenon Sculptures, The Queen Elizabeth II Great Court  ( including the restored Reading Room ), The King's Library, and vast collections of books, natural specimens and antiquities are among the features of The British Museum, which first opened to the pubic on 15 January, 1759.

The Tower of London is home to the Crown Jewels and the beloved Beefeaters Guards, along with fabulous stories of those held there over the course of many years of history.  It has been used as an armoury, a treasury, a managerie, a Public Records Office and the home of The Royal Mint. The Tower is a majestic presence on the River Thames, with its famous "Traitors' Gate" leading right to the water.

Big Ben  -  with the world's most famous chimes and clock architecture  -  shares glory in London with London Bridge, The Post Office Tower, and the new Wembley Stadium, London Eye Wheel and O2 Arena.

The Tate Britain features British Art from 1500 to Modern, including Tudors, Raphaelites, Romantics, Whistler, Francis Bacon and David Hockney.

The National Gallery  -  near the famous statue of Lord Nelson at Trafalgar Square  -  features the national collection of Western European painting from 1250 to 1900.  Immortals in the Gallery's Collection include van Eyck, Botticelli, Durer, Bellini, Leonardo da Vinci, Michaelangelo, Raphael, Hans Hobein, Bruegel, Titian, Veronese, Caravaggio, Reubens, Poussin, van Dyck, Velazquez, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Canaletto, Goya, Turner, Constable, Degas, Cezanne, Monet and Van Gogh.

London's West End is the scene for the world's premier Theatre, with roots tracing back to Shakespeare's Globe.

A sail up the River Thames takes you to Greenwich, where the standard of time and longitude for the world  -  The Prime Meridian  -  is located at The Royal Observatory. The beloved clipper Cutty Sark  -  master of the seas in the days of Tea Trade  -  is docked in Greenwich. 

Other jewels of British Culture include Shakespeare's house at Stratford Upon Avon, The Magna Carta, the Roman Walls and Lake District in Northern England, and the homes and works of such literary luminaries as Shelley, Keats, Kipling, Yeats and Shaw.
