Trees - Avatars of the Environment

The environmental - and social - benefits provided by trees are as vast as they are fascinating :                                                                                               Recreation - Habitats for Wildlife - "Cooling" urban communities / socially and environmentally - Energy conservation / reducing utility bills - Pharmaceutical and other medical purposes - Adding beauty and grace / blocking less desirable views - Keeping snow off roads (snow fences) Foods :  Walnuts, Pecans, Hickory, Plums, Peaches, Apples, Pears, Berries and Maple Syrup.                                                                                                 Windbreaks :  Increasing crop yields, lowering utility bills, containing snow, beauty, wildlife habitat on farms.

A marvelous blend of beauty and utility, trees remove tons of carbon from the atmosphere, produce life-giving oxygen, restore and maintain the productivity of oil and water resources and provide renewable, alternative fuel.

The USDA is going all-out to support and develop sustainable sites, urban sites, urban forests, budgeting for community tree programmes and research centres.

Globally, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has had tremendous success with its Plant for the Planet / Billion Tree Programme. Planted trees are ahead of schedule - rapidly approaching the goal of 1 billion worldwide.

With such an overwhelming response by people of all nations and cultures to the great value - and continuing development - of trees, their role in the world's environmental future is very bright indeed.
