ZPG / Zero Population Growth - The Vital Issue of Global Population - Part I

In a prominent position on the Home Page of Population Connection (formerly ZPG/Zero Population Growth) is a green square where white letters and numbers constantly indicate that the world's population is increasing at a rate of 3 per second - rushing headlong toward 7 billion. Nearly 80 million are added to the population of the Earth each year.

Population Connection works to advocate for : Environmental Preservation and Restoration - / For Natural Resources, Wildlife Habitats and the atmosphere - Women's Rights - / At least 200 million women around the world would like to delay or end child bearing, but they have no access to contraception. Family Planning improves maternal and infant health, allowing women more freedom - and activity - in society. - Social Justice - / The 50 poorest countries are also those with the highest fertility rates. Rapid population growth impedes progress on all Millennium Development Goals. Family planning improves quality of life for everyone.

30,000 Americans have joined the organisation, in the belief that population stabilisation is key to solving many of the greatest challenges to the planet.

While some measures have been taken to establish and develop solutions to the extraordinary pressures on all aspects of life on Earth that result from population explosion - the United Nations Estimates have gone down to just over 9 billion from over 12 billion for 2050 - many well-intended efforts, such as the "green revolution", along with UN and religious-based food and medical programmes, have been targeted at many areas that could least afford increases - or even current levels - of their populations.

Though general global fertility has decreased - from 5 children per woman in the 1950's to 2.65 around 2000 to just over 2/ long range (by 2050) - life spans have increased, from 46 in the 1950's, to 65 around 2000 to around 75 long range/ by 2050.

To 2050, 9 countries are projected to account for half the world's population increase - India / Pakistan / Nigeria / Democratic Republic of the Congo / Bangladesh / Uganda / United States / Ethiopia/ China - (China would be even higher if not for its "One Child Policy")

Using the Medium Variant / Cumulative Average Rate of Increase - Population Projections for 2050  : India - / 1.6 billion - China - / 1.4 billion - United States - / 400 million - Pakistan - / 309 million - Indonesia - / 280 million - Nigeria - / 259 million - Bangladesh - / 256 million - Brasil - / 254 million - Democratic Republic of Congo - / 187 million - Ethiopia - / 183 million - Philippines - / 141 million - Mexico - / 132 million - Egypt - / 121 million - Vietnam - / 120 million - Russia - / 108 million - Japan - / 103 million - Iran - / 100 million - Turkey - / 99 million - Uganda - / 93 million -  -Tanzania - / 85 million - Kenya - / 85 million - United Kingdom - / 80 million (Already among the most densely populated at 61 million - 80 million indicates a severe crisis)
